Classroom Management Plan for Volume Control

If you’re like me, you’ve probably tried a bunch of classroom management styles, hoping to find the ultimate classroom management plan to keep those kids’ chattiness under control.  After spending years wearing out my voice with constant repetitive nagging like “Quiet down please,” or “Let’s bring the volume level down a notch,” or “We are trying to focus, so the volume needs to come down,” I FINALLY found the ultimate solution!  I now have my classroom management plan for volume control perfected! 

Here’s how it works…

I started using a push light system over the last couple of years, and I’ll tell you, it works like a charm!  I wish I had discovered this sooner!  I use different colored lights to signal varying acceptable volume levels in my classroom.  I purchased the HONWELL Push Light 4 Pack from Amazon and am absolutely thrilled with the results.  Having a consistent classroom management plan with a clear visual for my students has been a complete game changer.  I would never go back!

Green = “Normal Talking Voices” – great for small group work and activities that allow for more socialization and collaboration

White = “Whispering Voices” – during work that requires a lot of focus (e.g. journal writing or reading comprehension), but where students might ask for a little help from peers

Red = “Silence” – quizzes, tests, silent reading and calming activities

Like I said, having a consistent classroom management plan with a clear visual of what the expectations are changed the whole vibe of my room.  And students were getting sooooo much more work done with less interruptions.

Each student gets a chance to be in charge of the Push Lights.  In my room, we have classroom jobs, so each week, I assign a student be the “Volume Control Operator.” Let me tell you, this is something that they ALL really look forward to!  At first, they need some instruction on which color setting we should be on, but they quickly get the hang of it as they get comfortable with our classroom routines and expectations.
