Top Digital Resources for Teaching Addition and Subtraction

top digital resources

Hi, friends! I hope you are enjoying your week. I’ve decided to do something a little different this time on the blog. I’ve had a lot of teachers reach out to me to ask about my favorite resources that I have found to be highly effective for teaching addition and subtraction skills. Addition and subtraction games are so much fun for kids! 😊

Digital resources are here to stay, so we should have the most effective ones ready for our students when they are ready to learn addition and subtraction skills and concepts. The following digital resources are ones that are also a big hit with my students, and I have heard great feedback on how much other teachers’ students love the fun characters, bright colors, and engaging activities!

Let’s Get Started

This post will be updated regularly with the most up-to-date products and brand NEW addition and subtraction digital resources to keep your students interested and learning!

⭐️ All resources include mini-lessons, anchor charts, example pages, and tons of student interactive task cards with movable pieces and/or text boxes (unless otherwise noted).

addition and subtraction

Addition and Subtraction Within 20

Fun, space-themed learning!

This resource has amazing visuals that represent addition and subtraction within 20! There is a lot of variety in this resource that will really reach all learners. This resource combines movable images with text boxes to solve various addition and subtraction equations and teaches kids how to break them down into smaller, easily digestible chunks.  Plus, it’s a fun, space theme that kids will have so much fun with!

This is similar to the 1st Grade version above, but also includes larger numbers to work with, which aligns more with 2nd Grade. This resource has the same amazing visuals to represent addition and subtraction within 20! Again, you will find lots of variety that will appeal to all of your students. It combines movable images with text boxes to solve various addition and subtraction equations, and teaches kids how to break them down into smaller, easily-digestible chunks. Another space-themed resource.

Another space-themed resource using catchy visuals to build addition and subtraction skills. The focus is on using counting to do addition and subtraction. We can count forward to add and backward to subtract. Extend the space-theme throughout your classroom for more learning fun.

This one introduces our littles to basic algebra. Students learn to find missing numbers in equations by applying part-part-whole strategies. They get comfortable breaking numbers into smaller chunks to complete equations. I really like that students get to move puzzle pieces and type in text boxes to complete their work. This is space-themed as well.

1st Grade Word Problems

These fun, space-themed word problems align with 1st grade curriculum and help kids get comfortable with applying addition and subtraction to fun space-themed scenarios. Students get to use digital math manipulatives like Bingo chips to solve problems and show their work. The nice thing about these is that the problems come in two sets: a) solving with manipulatives; and b) solving using part-part-whole strategies. The mini-lessons and anchor charts help build an understanding of how word problems work and what strategies we can use to solve them. Kids can highlight important info using movable transparent strips, they can show their work with manipulatives, and they are asked to create addition and subtraction sentences to represent and solve the problems.

2nd Grade Space-Themed Fun

These fun, space-themed word problems align with 2nd grade curriculum and help kids get comfortable with two-step word problems involving addition and subtraction. They get to use digital base ten blocks to solve problems and show their work. They also use part-part-whole strategies. I really like that the problems come in two sets: a) solving with manipulatives; and b) solving using part-part-whole strategies. The mini-lessons and anchor charts help build an understanding of how word problems work and what strategies we can use to solve them. Like the 1st grade edition, kids can highlight important info using movable transparent strips, they can show their work with manipulatives, and they are asked to create addition and subtraction sentences to represent and solve the problems.

Fun aliens!

I have found that this one is a total hit with the kids! So many fun visuals and interactive components. This resource really gets kids thinking about the relationship between addition and subtraction and how we can really think of subtraction as a missing-addend problem. Kids learn to use part-part-whole strategies to create related addition and subtraction sentences.

They also have fun adding and subtracting with ten frames and dragging and dropping addition and subtraction sentences to match related equations. Lots of fun aliens and spaceships in these activities. Super engaging! The mini-lessons and anchor charts break down the concept of part-part-whole – how we can take a number and break it into smaller chunks. The visuals really hep build a solid understanding of how addition and subtraction are related to each other.

Addition and Subtraction Within 100 (aka 2-Digit Addition and Subtraction)

Addition and subtraction worksheets are not the only way to learn these skills. Have fun when providing addition and subtraction problems to your class. Use a combination of digital resources, addition and subtraction games, and lots of engaging activities.

Perfect practice package!

This is the PERFECT practice package for teaching 2-digit addition and subtraction through distance learning. It also pairs perfectly with the Addition and Subtraction Within 100 resource (directly below this), which also includes mini-lessons and anchors charts to teach concepts. This intensive practice pack provides lots of opportunity for kids to build confidence in their skills.

I had a teacher contact me the other day saying how this resource pack SAVED her during distance learning. She had tried other resources, and the kids just weren’t getting it until they tried this one!

They enjoyed it so much, their confidence was super high, and they actually asked for more!! I set it up in a way that mimics addition and subtraction by hand. Kids can drag movable pieces to cross out numbers when regrouping, and they can type their new numbers in text boxes above. They also type their sums and differences in text boxes. It’s super user-friendly, and the slides are crisp, clear, and uncluttered.

As mentioned above, this pack pairs perfectly with the 2-Digit Addition and Subtraction Deep Dive Practice Pack (directly above this). In this pack, you get mini-lessons, anchor charts, and examples to teach concepts and get your kids really learning thoroughly. Kids learn to add and subtract with and without regrouping.

Introducing 2-Digit Addition and Subtraction

Next, This resource is a great introduction to 2-digit addition.  It keeps things nice and simple, only adding a 1-digit number to a 2-digit number.

This is another great introductory resource for 2-digit addition.  Kids get comfortable adding multiples of 10 to a 2-digit number.

Includes mini-lessons!

Similarly, this one is a great introductory resource for subtraction 2-digit numbers. It simply gets kids subtracting multiples of 10 from a 2-digit number. Students learn all about this through the mini-lessons at the beginning, which include helpful visuals.

Getting Ready for Multiplication

This one uses arrays to show repeated addition.  It’s a great prequel to learning multiplication. I found that students love the fun, space-themed images that are used in the arrays, as well as Lego blocks. Students get a chance to create addition sentences representing the arrays, as well as create their own arrays using movable pieces.

In this one, students add and subtract along a number line, as they drag arrows to count forward or backward.  Once they’ve reached their sum or difference, they type their answers in text boxes.

Addition Within 1000 (aka 3-Digit Addition and Subtraction)

This pack is an intensive practice pack that breaks down all forms of 3-digit subtraction. Kids get tons of practice as they gain confidence in their subtraction abilities. There are 6 different sets of task cards in this pack, breaking down 3-digit subtraction into chunks: Subtraction without regrouping, subtraction with regrouping in ones, tens, hundreds, and across zeroes, as well as a review set that covers all forms.

The digital, interactive task cards are set up similarly to how kids would work out subtraction problems by hand. There are movable pieces to show regrouping, and text boxes to type in answers. This resource pairs perfectly with the Addition and Subtraction Within 1000 resource noted directly below, which includes mini-lessons, anchor charts, and examples.

As mentioned, this one pairs nicely with the 3-Digit Subtraction Pack noted directly above. This resource includes all the mini-lessons, anchor charts, examples to teach concepts. I will also be creating a 3-Digit Addition Deep Dive Practice Pack in the next month or so, that will also be added to the 2nd Grade Complete Curriculum Bundle.

Beginner resource

This is a great introductory resource to 3-digit subtraction since students are simply subtracting multiples of 10 or 100. This makes it easier for them to conceptualize as they are focusing on just the tens or hundreds place.

Finally, this one focuses on adding up to four 2-digit numbers. Students learn how to regroup when necessary, and they gain confidence in adding several 2-digit numbers.
